Pushkar Fair

PUSHKAR FAIR - 29 Oct. to 5th Nov.

Pushkar fair is held every year on the auspicious fool moon day of the Hindu month of Karthik (October-November). The fair is very popular and famous among the tourists from all over the world and countless devotees from all faiths and belief gather here on this sacred day to take holy dip in the famous Pushkar Lake.

The fair offers an excellent opportunity to the local traders to display their work of arts, handicrafts and more importantly an option to interact with the people from different region of the Rajasthan. The whole atmosphere of the place gets highlighted with the colourful attire of the men and women, especially the evenings possess an excellent charm with lighted lamps that reflects in the lake giving spectular view of the sight.

History of pushkar fair
Pushkar is among the five Dhams or pilgrimages that are held in high esteem by Hindus, the others being Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram, and Dwarka. It is said that in battle lord Brahma killed the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower, whose petals floated down to earth and landed in three places in and around Pushkar where lakes sprang up. According to legends, Pushkar Lake was surrounded by 500 temples and 52 palaces (several rajas and maharajas maintained palaces here for pilgrimage) at one point.

The Brahma temple is the most important temple here and is, in fact, the only Brahma temple of India. It is interesting to note that Brahma is not worshipped, even though he is one of the Holy Trinity of Hinduism. Brahma, it is said, had descended on earth to perform a Yajna (fire-sacrifice). His wife Savitri was not with him at that time and the Yajna would be incomplete without her. Therefore, Brahma married a local girl and sat down for the Yajna. Meanwhile Savitri landed on earth and, upon finding this new bride sitting next to Brahma, cursed him that he would never be worshipped anywhere else on earth."

Event in Pushkar Fair
The major attraction of the fair is the Camel Trade Fair, that showcases the best breed of camels accumulated from entire Rajasthan. Apart from this the events like camel race and camel auction are also organised in the fair.

In addition to all these, the several cultural events takes place in the fair. The local people dressed in colourful attire and in heavy jewellery performs in the various events. The cultural event includes - folk dance, folk music, and several other entertaining activities


How to reach
Air -nearest airport is Jaipur, which is connected with major cities. A newly built air strip at Kishangarh can cater to small charter flights. Helipad at Ghooghra (Ajmer) and Devnagar (Pushkar) can cater to clients travelling by helicopter.

Rail -Ajmer is well connected by Rail to all-important cities. Pushkar is just 12 Km. away from Ajmer.

Road -Ajmer is well connected to important cities of Rajasthan and country. Jaipur-145 Km., Delhi-415 Km., Mumbai-900 Km., Ahemadabad-520 Km., Jodhpur-205 Km., Bikaner-265 Km., Nagaur-1 SO Km., Jaisalmer-475 Km., Merta-70 Km., Bundi-180 Km., Kota-220 Km.
